As a handsome young classical vocal arts/acting student, John began his career while an undergraduate at the Boston University School of Music. While completing his degree the theatrical community discovered his talents and actively sought John for work on stage, in film, and in television. With a growing demand for his talents, he embarked on a career more oriented towards musical theater and film while continuing his operatic studies. He became an active member of Actor’s Equity and AFTRA during this period and continued to ply his trade on stage and in television.
It was during a musical production in 2002 that John realized his efforts on stage were lacking a “substantial something” that opera offered but musical theater did not. He headed back to secure his Master of Music Degree from the University of Hartford’s Hartt School in 2006, intensified his voice training with opera specialists, and began to secure work exclusively in the opera genre. By 2007, and having completed his Master of Music Degree in 2008, John became active in oratorio and opera performances and soon began appearing on stage with his rich, luxuriant high voice while providing the emotional connection with audiences that represent what the great Verdi baritones offer to adoring audiences.
Immediately the opera community embraced him as a consummate actor, his temperament carefully developed during his early years on the theatrical stage. Having spent a season as a studio resident with Sarasota and Chautauqua Opera John was well served by the classical training provided by these two stellar companies. This only served to enhance his growth vocally while he continued to apply his natural talent as a consummate actor. Stints with New Orleans Opera, Center City, and Wichita Grand Opera offered the opera community the opportunity to embrace John and establish him as an up and coming baritone to be reckoned with.
Recent appearances for John include Morales and covering Escamillo in Carmen for New Orleans Opera, Amonasro in Aida for Center City Opera, and Germont in La Traviata for BMCC in 2009. John will be performing as Koko in The Mikado in late 2009, as Schaunard in La Boheme for the New Britain Symphony Orchestra in 2010, and is on the radar of several regional companies for upcoming seasons. John is a Professor of Voice at the University of Hartford but also teaches and resides in New York City. He continues to work with the renowned baritone, Mark Oswald, weekly.
