Isaac Hurtado, Tenor

Among operatic tenors today, Isaac Hurtado has a rare combination of gifts: a voice of unique color and beauty, convincing, heartfelt acting, and a striking visual presence. Since making his leading-role debut in 2004 as Roméo in Gounod's Roméo et Juliette with Festival Opera, audiences and critics have raved about the tenor's "warm and flowingly lyrical" voice that "caresses the ear," his "wonderful acting" that "makes us feel what he is singing," and his "movie star good looks and athletic build that fit the image of a romantic hero."

The 2006-2007 season finds Hurtado in California as a principal artist in residence for Opera San Jose, where he sings Roméo in Roméo et Juliette, Alfredo in La Traviata, and Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly. Roles on the horizon include Edgardo in Lucia di Lamermoor, Werther in Werther, the Duke in Rigoletto, and Tamino in Die Zauberflöte.

In 2005, in the wake of his success as Roméo, Festival Opera re-engaged Hurtado in the role of Candide in a new production of Bernstein's Candide staged by Michael Scarola. Again critics raved: "Isaac Hurtado's beautiful lyric voice carried the day in the title role." Prior to his Festival Opera debut, Hurtado was heard as an apprentice artist with Central City Opera in 2002. There he performed the role of Roger Doremus in a rare production of Hoiby's Summer and Smoke (later featured across the country on NPR's World of Opera), and covered the role of Lysander in Britten's A Midsummer Night's Dream. As a young artist with Opera North in 2000, Hurtado sang the role of Brighella in Ariadne auf Naxos. In 1998 and 1999 he was an apprentice artist with Utah Festival Opera. Mr. Hurtado has also performed with Opera Circle of Cleveland, Martinez Opera, Cincinnati Opera, and Opera Theatre of Lucca, Italy.

Selected honors for Mr. Hurtado include winning the 2003 Hannah Beaulieu Career Development Award at Florida State University, and becoming a 2003 national finalist in the Heinz-Rehfuss Singing Actor Competition. He received his musical training at Florida State University under the tutelage of Stanford Olsen, and at the Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, and Brigham Young University.
